Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cups granulated Sugar (or can use agave syrup or artificial sweetener as desired)- please note you may need to adjust sweetener to the sweetness or tartness of the types of oranges used. I know that most simple syrups call for 1 part sugar to 1 part water.  However now living in Asia, I no longer like my desserts too sweet so please adjust to your liking)
  • 4-5 whole star anise
  • 10 oz orange juice
from 5 fresh oranges or can use orange juice

Instructions

  • In a small sauce pan add water, whole anise cloves and sugar and bring to a boil and stir just until the sugar dissolves. Set aside and let cool.
  • Cut up peeled oranges into quarters and put into the blender to puree and juice. (If you do not have a blender then just squeeze out the juice)
  • Place the orange puree through a strainer to gather all the juices.
  • Add the orange juice to the cooled star anise sugar solution into a Tupperware container with a lid and put into freezer.
  • Every ½ to 1 hour scape the granita mixture with a fork to make snowy orange anise ice flakes. Freeze for at least 4 hours.
  • Scrape your fork to make ice shavings and serve in a martini glass. Enjoy the sweet, numbing euphoria!
