In reply to Larry. Hi Larry! Generally speaking, Watermelon is labeled as a fruit because it is so sweet. However, it comes from the "Cucurbitaceae famiIy" and these are a group of vegetables like cucumbers, gourds, pumpkins, and others. Maybe this is why watermelon tastes so delicious grilled with vegetables from the same family. Citrus fruits like lemons and limes have a bitter peel. However, watermelon does not get bitter when grilled, even if you grill or cook the rind. As a matter of fact, many Asian countries will stir fry watermelon rinds like a vegetable for a delicious side dish. Give it a go, it is quite delicious.

Is watermelon a fruit or a vegetable? I have hear that there are bitter acids that can be released from the inside of the peel for many fruits -- like oranges and limes? A barman told me care must be used when extracting the juice. Have you heard this? Any insights?

I actually decided to try this unusual watermelon recipe because I couldn't imagine grilling watermelon. You need to try this....you will really love it. The grilling enhances the succulent taste of the melon, but the Thai salad dressing is something special.

I've had grilled watermelon but have never had grilled cucumber. Sounds really interesting and worth a try. Your salad looks fabulous and takes the heat out of the kitchen as well. YAY!
